ABSTRACT Due to its excellent resistance to traction and compression, wood is regularly used in furniture, window frames and in structures and sealing of homes and buildings. Due to the anisotropy and complexity of the material, its properties vary depending on its intrinsic anatomical characteristics and external factors, such as species, moisture content, acting requests, among others. The Brazilian standard provides linear models for estimating and correcting all strength and stiffness properties as a function of the moisture content of the wood. However, due to its characteristics, there may not be a linear variation of the physical and mechanical properties in relation to the moisture content. Thus, this research aims to evaluate and analyze the influence of moisture content on 15 properties of Calophyllum sp. The reliability of the Brazilian standard equation for correcting strength and stiffness values as a function of humidity (U% to 12%) was evaluated, in addition to analyzing, through ANOVA, whether there is a change in the properties when they are at the saturation point of the fiber and 12% moisture. Of the 15 properties analyzed, 4 did not change, contrary to the linear models set out in the Brazilian standard. In addition, it was possible to note that the Brazilian standard can estimate with an error of up to 76% when correcting the humidity to 12%.

RESUMO A madeira por possuir excelente resistência à tração e compressão é comumente utilizada em móveis, esquadrias e em estruturas e vedação de residências e edifícios. Devido à anisotropia e complexidade do material, suas propriedades variam em função de suas características anatômicas intrínsecas e de fatores externos, como a espécie, teor de umidade, solicitações atuantes, dentre outros. A norma brasileira traz modelos lineares para a estimativa e correção de todas as propriedades de resistência e de rigidez em função do teor de umidade da madeira. Porém, devido às suas características, pode não haver variação linear das propriedades físicas e mecânicas em relação ao teor de umidade. Assim, esta pesquisa tem como objetivo avaliar e analisar a influência do teor de umidade em 15 propriedades da madeira Calophyllum sp. Foi avaliada a confiabilidade da equação da norma brasileira para corrigir os valores de resistência e rigidez em função da umidade (U% para 12%), além de analisar, por meio de ANOVA, se há alteração nas propriedades quando estão no ponto de saturação da fibra e 12% de umidade. Das 15 propriedades analisadas, 4 não sofreram alteração, contrariando os modelos lineares dispostos na norma brasileira. Além disso, foi possível notar que a norma brasileira pode estimar com erro de até 76% ao corrigir a umidade para 12%.

Abstract Shear strength parallel to the fibers (f v0 ) is extremely important for the design of timber structures. Then, due to the lack of information related to a possible variation in the f v0 of hardwood species according to the load application plane in relation to its growth rings/rays, this work performed tests for the determination of f v0 according to NBR 7190-3 (ABNT, 2022b) varying load planes. Thereby, the load was applied on the longitudinal-tangential (LT) and longitudinal-radial (LR) planes of the species of caixeta (Simarouba amara) and roxinho (Peltogyne spp.). Through variance analysis (5% confidence), results did not point to statistical differences between f v0 values when the load plane was changed. Therefore, the f v0 of this species can be determined without significant risk of reduction according to ray/ring orientation. Furthermore, it was determined a ratio of f v0,k /f c0,k equal to 0.23 and 0.38 was determined for roxinho and caixeta, respectively. Thus, this result confirms the need for characterizing unfamiliar wood species when received on construction site, in order to save money and/or for safety reasons.

Resumo Aresistência ao cisalhamento paralelo às fibras (fv0) é de extrema importância no projeto de estruturas de madeira. Logo, devido à falta de informações a respeito de uma possível variação na fv0 de espécies folhosas de acordo com o plano de aplicação de carga em relação a seus anéis de crescimento/raios, este trabalho realizou ensaios para a determinação da fv0 de acordo com a NBR 7190-3 (ABNT, 2022b), variando-se planos de carga. O carregamento foi aplicado no plano longitudinal tangencial (LT) e longitudinal radial (LR) das espécies de caixeta (Simarouba amara) e roxinho (Peltogyne spp.). Por meio da análise de variância (5% de significância), os resultados não apontaram diferença estatística entre os valores da fv0 quando se variou o plano de carga. Portanto, a fv0 dessas espécies pode ser determinada sem que haja risco significativo de minoração de acordo com a disposição dos raios/anéis. Além disso, foi determinada uma relação de fv0,k/fc0,k igual a 0,23 e 0,38 para o roxinho e a caixeta, respectivamente. Assim, esse resultado corrobora a necessidade de se caracterizar a madeira de espécie pouco conhecida quando recebida na obra, de modo a gerar economia e/ou segurança.

Abstract NBR 7190 (ABNT, 1997) defines the simplified characterization, where there is the use of mathematical relationships between the properties of strength and stiffness. Due to the great influence of porosity and apparent density on wood properties and the search for increasingly accurate mathematical models, this work aimed to generate regression models for the estimation of static bending properties (strength " f M " and modulus " E M "), hardness parallel to the grain " f H,0 " and normal to the grain " f H,90 " and toughness "W" of Brazilian tropical woods from the porosity values, obtained through the analysis mercury instruction porosimetry, apparent density and based on both properties in multivariate regression models. All regression models presented coefficients of determination "R 2 " greater than 50%, where f M , f H,90 and W were best estimated by density apparent, E M and f H,0 were better estimated considering apparent density and porosity.

Resumo ANBR 7190 (ABNT, 1997) define a caracterização simplificada, onde há o uso de relações matemáticas entre as propriedades de resistência e rigidez. Devido à grande influência da porosidade e da densidade aparente nas propriedades das madeiras e à busca por modelos matemáticos cada vez mais precisos, este trabalho teve como objetivo’ gerar modelos de regressão para a estimativa das propriedades de flexão estática (resistência “f M ” e módulo “E M ”), resistência à dureza paralela “f H,0 ” e normal às fibras “f H,90 ”, e resistência à tenacidade “W” de madeiras tropicais brasileiras a partir dos valores de porosidade, obtidos por meio da análise de porosimetria por intrusão de mercúrio, da densidade aparente e com base em ambas as propriedades em modelos de regressão multivariáveis. Todos os modelos de regressão apresentaram coeficientes de determinação “R2” superiores a 50%. A f M , a f H,90 e a W foram melhor estimadas pela densidade aparente, enquanto o E M e a f H,0 foram melhor estimados considerando a densidade aparente e a porosidade.

Resumo O painel MDF pode sofrer mudanças dimensionais, o que compromete seu desempenho. Uma forma de melhorar o desempenho do painel é incorporar nanopartículas. A presente pesquisa estudou o efeito do uso de nanopartículas de óxido de zinco em diferentes teores (0%, 0,5% e 1,0%) em painéis MDF fabricados com resina ureia-formaldeído (UF), resina melamina-formaldeído (MF) e fibras de Eucalyptusgrandis. Também avaliou o uso de modelos de regressão para estimar propriedades físicas e mecânicas em função do adesivo utilizado e do teor de ZnO incorporado. Os tratamentos com resina MF apresentaram melhor desempenho quando comparados com os tratamentos que utilizaram adesivo UF. O teor ótimo para adição de nanopartículas foi o de 0,5%. O teor de 1,0% levou ao aumento no teor de umidade, ao inchamento e à diminuição dos valores de MOR e MOE, o que pode ser justificado pela cura acelerada e pelo superaquecimento das camadas externas, prejudicando a cura das camadas interiores. O modelo com maior precisão foi o estimador da densidade aparente, sendo os fatores resina, ZnO e interação significativos.

Abstract MDF panels can undergo dimensional changes, compromising their performance. One way to improve the performance of the panel is to incorporate nanoparticles. This study analysed the effect of using zinc oxide nanoparticles at different levels (0%, 0.5% and 1.0%) in MDF panels manufactured with urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin, melamine-formaldehyde resin (MF) and Eucalyptus grandis fibres. It also evaluated the use of regression models to estimate physical and mechanical properties as a function of the adhesive used and the content of incorporated ZnO. Treatments using MF resin presented a better performance than treatments using UF adhesive. The optimal content of nanoparticles addition was 0.5%. The 1.0% content led to an increase in moisture content, swelling and a decrease in MOR and MOE values, possibly caused by an accelerated curing and overheating of the outer layers, affecting the curing of the inner layers. The most accurate model was the bulk density estimator, with resin, ZnO and interaction factors being the most significant.

Resumo Devido ao preconceito, a madeira passa de um material de excelente aplicabilidade estrutural para um material considerado vilão do meio ambiente. Entretanto, com a utilização de madeiras de reflorestamento, a madeira vem quebrando esse paradigma e apresenta-se como um excelente material estrutural. Nas ligações estruturais desse tipo de estrutura, as barras de aço coladas têm sido amplamente utilizadas. A avaliação da resistência de ancoragem das barras de aço coladas depende do tipo de adesivo, da rugosidade da barra de aço, da superfície de aderência na região de ancoragem e da umidade da madeira, entre outros fatores que podem ser definidos e controlados no projeto. Neste trabalho, apresentam-se aspectos de projeto, técnica de aplicação, comportamento mecânico das barras de aço (diâmetros de 6,3 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm e 12,5 mm), sem galvanização, coladas com adesivos epóxi e poliuretano em peças de madeira (Pinus oocarpa e Corymbia citriodora), e as formas de ruptura quando solicitadas a esforços axiais (tração e compressão) em corpos de prova, além de abordar as técnicas de colagem e o controle de qualidade. Apresentam-se, ainda, influências das propriedades mecânicas da madeira e das principais variáveis significativas na resistência de ancoragem das barras de aço. É possível concluir que o adesivo epóxi foi a melhor opção para ser utilizada nesse tipo de aplicação.

Abstract As a result of prejudice, wood has not been considered a material with outstanding structural applicability, but rather as an environmental villain. However, with the use of reforestation wood, that paradigm is shifting, and the material is starting to be seen an excellent structural material. In structural connections involving wood, glued steel bars are widely used. The anchorage resistance evaluation of the bonded steel bars depends on the adhesive, on the steel bar roughness, the adhesion surface in the anchorage region, wood humidity among other construction factors that can be defined and controlled in the design. This paper also discusses design aspects, application techniques, the mechanical behaviour of the steel bars (diameters of 6.3 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm and 12.5 mm) without galvanizing, bonded with epoxy or polyurethane adhesives on the wooden parts (Pinus oocarpa and Corymbia citriodora) and forms of rupture when subjected to axial efforts (traction and compression) in specimens. In addition, this article also addresses bonding techniques and quality control, as well as the influence of the mechanical properties of wood and the most influential variables in the anchorage steel bars strength. The study concludes that the epoxy adhesive is the best option to be used in this type of application.

RESUMO: O Brasil é o segundo maior país em área de florestas no mundo, o que torna propícia a exploração e uso de espécies variadas na construção civil. Um dos usos tradicionais da madeira se dá nos telhados das edificações para as mais diferentes finalidades. Tendo em vista que as patologias mais recorrentes nas estruturas de cobertura estão relacionadas às deformações excessivas verificadas nos elementos estruturais, principalmente nos sujeitos à flexão, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo verificar a efetiva representatividade do valor médio do módulo de elasticidade na compressão paralela estabelecido pela norma brasileira para madeiras da Classe C40. Foram considerados lotes de oito diferentes espécies de madeira tropicais, cujo enquadramento se deu na referida Classe. Os resultados obtidos dos intervalos de confiança para cada espécie avaliada possibilitaram concluir que o valor de 19500 MPa para o módulo de elasticidade não é representativo para a Classe C40, pois o valor encontrado nessa pesquisa foi 14467 MPa, resultado esse 26% inferior à referência normativa. Essa constatação é um indicativo inicial de que a adoção do valor de 19500 MPa pela norma é desfavorável à segurança da estrutura, justificando as patologias observadas no desempenho em serviço das estruturas de cobertura.

ABSTRACT: Brazil has the world’s second largest forest area, which makes the exploitation and use of varied species in civil construction conducive. One of the traditional uses of wood is to build roofs for different purposes. Considering that the most recurrent pathologies in the roof structures are related to the excessive deformations observed in the structural elements, particularly in those subjected to bending. This study verified the effective representativeness of the stiffness value established by the Brazilian Class wood standard, C40. Batches of eight different tropical wood species were considered, whose framing occurred in the referred Class. Results obtained from the confidence intervals for each evaluated species led to the conclusion that the value of 19500 MPa for the modulus of elasticity is not representative for Class C40 because the value observed in this study was 14467 MPa, which is 26% lower than the normative reference. This observation is an initial indication that the adoption of the value of 19500 MPa by the standard is unfavorable to the safety of the structure, justifying the pathologies observed in the service performance of the roof structures.

Abstract: Engineered wood products need alternatives of raw materials to their production. The hybrid Eucalyptus urograndis has great potential to supply the demand of this industrial sector. In this context, the present paper aims to analyse the feasibility of using Eucalyptus urograndis in glued laminated timber (glulam) production. To this end, four groups with ten glulam beams each, were produced and tested. An extensive experimental program was performed in order to determine: the stiffness and bending strength of the beams; and the compression strength parallel to grain of the beams. The performance of structural adhesives was verified based on shear tests of glue lines. The experimental mean of stiffness was higher than 14675 MPa and the characteristic value of compression strength parallel to grain achieved a value above 40 MPa. Nevertheless, failure mode of the glulam beams showed that finger-joints reduced bending strength. The glulam beams produced with Eucalyptus urograndis proved to be a feasible alternative due to their mechanical properties. However, this material presents difficulties in finger-joints adhesion.

ABSTRACT Brazil owns a large vegetal covering and the best utilization of these materials requires physical and mechanical characterization procedures. Equations found in the literature make easier the wood properties determination. At this context, well known authors developed the equation βl = βt/23, being βl and βt the longitudinal and tangential shrinkage percentages, for βl estimation based on the βt value specially for wood species from the Northern hemisphere. This paper aims to investigate the accuracy of this equation for fifteen tropical Brazilian wood species covering the entire range of hardwood strength classes according to the Brazilian Normative ABNT NBR7190. The average experimental values of βl and βt were 7.71% (CV = 26,71%) and 0.73% (CV = 38,76%), respectively. The non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA refuted the hypothesis of equivalence between theoretical and experimental βl values (p-value = 0.0000). A linear regression model fitted to experimental values provided βl = βt/9,84 as optimal solution (p-value = 0.0000, R2 = 47,23%). According to results it is possible to conclude that the value of longitudinal shrinkage percentage of tropical Brazilian wood species is statistically 2,34 times greater than the value found in the literature, which impacts the design of timber structures procedures increasing the internal stresses in timber structural elements.

RESUMO O Brasil possui grande cobertura vegetal e o melhor aproveitamento desses materiais requer procedimentos de caracterização física e mecânica. Equações encontradas na literatura facilitam a determinação das propriedades da madeira. Nesse contexto, autores conhecidos desenvolveram a equação βl = βt/23, sendo βl e βt as porcentagens de retração longitudinal e tangencial, para estimativa de βl com base no valor de βl especialmente para espécies de madeira do hemisfério Norte. Este trabalho tem como objetivo investigar a precisão desta equação para quinze espécies de madeiras tropicais brasileiras cobrindo toda a faixa de classes de resistência da madeira de lei de acordo com o Norma Brasileira ABNT NBR 7190. Os valores experimentais médios de βl e βt foram 7,71% (CV = 26,71 %) e 0,73% (CV = 38,76%), respectivamente. A ANOVA não paramétrica de Kruskal-Wallis refutou a hipótese de equivalência entre os valores de βl teórico e experimental (p-valor = 0,0000). Um modelo de regressão linear ajustado aos valores experimentais forneceu βl =βt/9,84 como solução ótima (p-valor = 0,0000, R² = 47,23%). De acordo com os resultados, é possível concluir que o valor da porcentagem de retração longitudinal das espécies de madeira tropical brasileira é estatisticamente 2,34 vezes maior que o valor encontrado na literatura, o que impacta nos procedimentos de dimensionamento de estruturas de madeira aumentando as tensões internas nas estruturas de madeira.

ABSTRACT To simplify the characterization of wood species, the Brazilian standard document ABNT NBR 7190-1 (2022) establishes the determination of mechanical properties employing the characteristic strength in the compression parallel to grain (fc0,k). This mechanical property is estimated using the linear relation given by the following expression fv0,k = 0.12·fc0,k Brazilian and European standard documents support the estimation of fv0,k using relations among properties. However, the European guidelines in the EN 384 (2019) have used the conventional characteristic strength in the static bending test (fM,k). Thus, this study aimed to investigate the efficiency of the ratio fv0,k = 0.12·fc0,k for adopting 30 hardwoods. The variance analysis results demonstrate the divergence among the experimental outcomes and those values estimated using the relation cited. Therefore, regression models at two parameters were considered to obtain more accurate estimates of fv0,k by adopting fc0,k, and fM,k as independent variables. Regarding the results, the geometric (R² = 80.80%) and linear (R² = 74.19%) models were the most accurate for the estimates of fv0,k in terms of fc0,k, and fM,k, respectively. This fact evinces the good accuracy of the models under consideration, which may provide a more rigorous structural design compared to the correlation currently prescribed by the ABNT NBR 7190-1 (2022).

RESUMO Para simplificar a caracterização de espécies de madeira, o documento normativo brasileiro ABNT NBR 7190-1 (2022) estabelece a determinação de propriedades mecânicas por meio da resistência característica na compressão paralela às fibras (fc0,k). Essa propriedade mecânica é estimada utilizando-se da relação linear dada pela expressão a seguir fv0,k = 0.12·fc0,k. Ambos os documentos normativos europeu e brasileiro prescrevem a estimativa da fv0,k empregando-se relações entre propriedades, embora as diretrizes da europeia contidas na EN 384 (2019) utilize a resistência característica convencional obtida no teste de flexão estática (fM,k). Assim, esse estudo teve o objetivo de investigar a eficiência da relação fv0,k = 0.12·fc0,k para 30 espécies folhosas. Os resultados da análise de variância demonstram a divergência entre os resultados experimentais e aqueles estimados utilizando-se da relação citada. Portanto, modelos de regressão em função de dois parâmetros foram considerados para se obter estimativas mais precisas da fv0,k através da adoção da fc0,k e fM,k como variáveis independentes. Com relação aos resultados, os modelos geométrico (R² = 80.80%) e linear (R² = 74.19%) foram os mais precisos para a estimativa da fv0,k em termos da fc0,k e fM,k, respectivamente. Este fato evidencia a boa precisão dos modelos em questão, o que pode proporcionar um dimensionamento estrutural mais rigoroso quando comparado à correlação atualmente prescrita pela ABNT NBR 7190-1 (2022).

Resumo Para o dimensionamento correto de estruturas de madeira, as premissas da norma brasileira são de extrema valia como norte para os engenheiros estruturais, pois exibem valores padrão de resistência. Dessa forma, este estudo tem como objetivo analisar se o valor do módulo de elasticidade da classe C60 exibido na norma brasileira confere com os valores obtidos em ensaio de 23 espécies brasileiras, utilizando a metodologia Bootstrap com 1 milhão de simulações. Além disso, analisa-se, com modelos de regressão, se é possível estimar a propriedade de rigidez (E c0 ) dessas 23 espécies em função da densidade aparente. É possível concluir que a norma brasileira superestima o módulo de elasticidade das madeiras brasileiras, apresentado um valor quase 35% superior ao que realmente elas resistem, evidenciando que a norma necessita passar por revisão. Outro ponto é que os modelos de regressão não mostram significância, ou seja, com a densidade aparente não é possível estimar a propriedade de rigidez analisada.

Abstract For correct dimensioningof wood structures, the premises of the Brazilian standard are extremely valuable as a guide for structural engineers, as it exhibits standard values of resistance. Thus, this study aims to analyze whether the value of the class C60 elasticity module shown in the Brazilian standard matches the values obtained in the test of 23 Brazilian species, using the Bootstrap methodology with 1 million simulations. In addition, it sought to analyze, with regression models, whether it is possible to estimate this rigidity property (E c0 ) of these 23 species as a function of apparent density. Finally, it was possible to conclude that the Brazilian standard overestimates the modulus of elasticity of Brazilian woods, presenting a value almost 35% higher than what actually resists, showing that the standard needs to be revised. Another point was that the regression models do not show significance, in other words, with the apparent density it was not possible to estimate the analyzed rigidity property.

Resumo A madeira de mogno (Swietenia macrophylla King) é uma das mais valiosas encontradas no Continente Americano. Esse trabalho visou avaliar a produção de painéis de partículas de resíduos dos galhos e troncos dessa espécie. Foram avaliados a viabilidade de produção, as propriedades físicas e mecânicas e, além disso, foi realizada a comparação dos resultados com estudos similares e requisitos de normas. Os painéis foram fabricados a partir dos resíduos do tronco e dos galhos, de forma separada e misturados em diferentes proporções para testar sua influência no produto final. Foram aglomerados usando resina de poliuretano e prensados a 90°C e 3,5 MPa por 10 minutos. As amostras foram testadas para flexão estática, aderência interna, rigidez e inchamento (24 h), de acordo com as recomendações da NBR 14810. Os resultados indicaram que não houve correlação significativa entre a proporção tronco-galhos e os valores de módulo de elasticidade/ruptura. A produção dos painéis foi considerada viável e os resultados da maioria dos testes atenderam aos requisitos normativos.

Abstract Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King) is one of the most valuable wood species found in the American Continent. This study is an evaluation of the production of particleboards using wood residues from the branches and trunk of a mahogany tree. It was designed to test the feasibility of production and the mechanical and physical characteristics of the finished particleboards, as well as to compare the results with similar studies and the requirements of normative documents. The particles were generated from the trunk and branches of a mahogany tree separately and mixed in different proportions to test their influence on the final product. They were bonded using 12% polyurethane resin from renewable resources and pressed under 90º C and 3.5 MPa for 10 minutes. The specimens were prepared and tested according to the guidelines established by the NBR 14810 regarding the static bending, internal bond, stiffness and thickness swelling (24h) tests. The results indicated that there is no significant correlation between the trunk-branches proportion and the Modulus of Elasticity/Rupture values. The production of the particleboards using the residues is feasible and the results of most of the tests fitted the normative requirements, which means that with the refinement of the production process it is possible to have a good product that fully complies with the technical standards.

Resumo Pela complexidade anatômica e variabilidade intrínseca das propriedades encontradas dentro de uma mesma espécie, a madeira tem sido tratada, pelos diversos documentos normativos, como material isotrópico, com valores de resistência e de rigidez determinados por meio de formulações advindas da resistência dos materiais. A falta de informações experimentais, aliada ao desconhecimento da utilização de critérios de resistência para materiais anisotrópicos, aumenta as incertezas na análise de falha das estruturas quanto às estimativas das propriedades de resistência e rigidez em função da orientação das fibras. Com o objetivo de solucionar este problema, modelos empíricos têm sido desenvolvidos e incorporados em diversos documentos normativos nacionais e internacionais. Tais modelos são ajustados em função de um expoente (n) que fornece o melhor ajuste, entretanto, mesmo em se tratando do mesmo modelo, ainda há divergências com relação ao uso desse expoente. Nesse contexto, esta pesquisa objetivou propor um modelo para a estimativa do valor característico de resistência à tração inclinada (ftθ,k) e compará-lo com modelos empíricos provenientes da literatura correlata (com os ajustes ótimos do expoente n), para evidenciar o melhor ajuste. Os resultados obtidos revelaram que o modelo desenvolvido na pesquisa foi o mais preciso.

Abstract Due to the anatomical complexity and intrinsic variability of properties found in the same species, wood is treated as an isotropic material by various normative codes, where the strength and stiffness values are determined by the strength of materials. The lack of experimental information combined with the lack of knowledge on using strength criteria for anisotropic materials increases the uncertainties in the analysis of structures failures with regards to estimating strength and stiffness properties depending on fiber orientation. To address this issue, empirical models have been developed and incorporated in several Brazilian and international normative documents. Those models are adjusted according to an exponent (n) that provides the best fit, however, even in the case of the same model, there are still differences regarding the use of this exponent. Hence, the aim of this study is to propose a model to estimate the characteristic off-axis tensile strength value (f tθ,k ), as well as to compare it with empirical models from the literature (with the optimal adjustments of exponent n), making it possible to highlight the best fit. The results showed that the model developed in the research study was the most accurate.

Resumo O principal objetivo deste trabalho foi estabelecer uma correlação entre o envelhecimento natural com o envelhecimento artificial em painéis aglomerados de média densidade produzidos com resina de poliuretano de mamona e Pinus sp. Para tal correlação, foram utilizados os parâmetros climatológicos da cidade de São Carlos, estado de São Paulo, Brasil. A correlação estabelecida foi que 20 ciclos seriam proporcionais à mesma degradação de dois meses de exposição ao envelhecimento natural. A relação entre as propriedades físicas e mecânicas com os efeitos proporcionados pelo número de meses (M) sobre o envelhecimento natural com número de ciclos (Nc) sobre o envelhecimento artificial foi obtida com modelos de regressão polinomial cúbica. Em geral, para propriedades físicas, 20 Nc representa de 7 a 8 meses e para propriedades mecânicas, de 11 a 12 meses, com exceção da tração perpendicular, de 8 meses de envelhecimento natural. As equações que melhor representam a relação entre Nc e M foram o inchamento em espessura às 2h e a absorção de água às 2h e 24h, com R² acima de 93%.

Abstract The main objective of this work was to establish a correlation between natural aging with artificial aging in medium density particleboards produced with polyurethane resin of castor oil and Pinus sp. For such correlation, climatological parameters at São Carlos city, São Paulo state Brazil were used. The established correlation was that 20 cycles would be proportional to the same degradation of two months of exposure under natural aging. The relation between physical and mechanical properties with the effects provided by number of months (M) on the natural aging with number of cycles (Nc) on the artificial aging was obtained with cubical polynomial regression models. In general, for physical properties, 20 Nc represents 7 to 8 months and for mechanical properties, 11 to 12 months, with exception to internal bonding, with 8 months of natural aging. The equations which best represent the relation between Nc and M were thickness swelling at 2h and water absorption at 2 h and 24 h, with R² above 93%.

Resumo O objetivo do presente estudo foi criar um modelo teórico que permitisse com segurança e confiabilidade obter, valores de resistência e rigidez aos quais o elemento estrutural será submetido ao longo de sua vida útil. O efeito foi estudado para as propriedades de resistência e rigidez, e o módulo de elasticidade (E M ) e a resistência à flexão (f M ) no teste de flexão estática foram avaliados de acordo com o número crescente de ciclos do teste de fadiga para as cinco classes de madeiras duras, recomendado por norma NBR 7190. Uma redução nas propriedades de resistência e rigidez foi observada com o aumento dos ciclos de carregamento N aplicados em todas as frequências. A partir dos modelos de regressão multivariada e dos respectivos coeficientes de determinação, obteve-se um modelo genérico para o conjunto envolvendo as cinco espécies de madeira, enfatizando a inserção da densidade aparente como variável independente, o que permitiu uma maior generalização do uso dos ajustes no estimativa das propriedades E M e f M , apresentando coeficientes de determinação significativos, variando entre 69,89% e 70,58%.

Abstract The aim of present study was to create a theoretical model that allowed, with security and reliability, to obtain values of strength and stiffness to which the structural element will be submitted throughout its useful life. The effect was studied for strength and stiffness properties, and the modulus of elasticity (EM) and bending strength (fM) on static bending test were evaluated according to the increasing number of cycles of the fatigue test for the five classes of hardwoods, recommended by NBR 7190 Standard Code. A reduction in strength and stiffness properties was observed with increasing loading Ncycles applied at two frequency levels. From the multivariate regression models and the respective determination coefficients, a generic model was obtained for the set involving the five wood species, emphasizing the insertion of the apparent density as an independent variable, which allowed a greater generalization of the use of the adjustments in the estimation of the EM and fM properties, presenting significant determination coefficients, ranging between 67.89% and 70.58%.

Abstract In order to evaluate the influence of moisture content on wood physical and mechanical properties, the present research analyzed the influence of moisture content variation on Cedrella sp. on 12 strength and stiffness properties, considering 12% moisture content up to Fiber Saturation Point (FSP) were considered. Brazilian Standard consider a correction on wood properties obtained on moisture content different of 12%, reducing the properties. Eight properties from these twelve were significantly influenced by moisture content according to statistical analysis (5% significance level). ANOVA, Anderson Darling and Multiple Comparison tests were used at 5% significance level. Considering that most of properties were affected by moisture content, the equations to estimate wood properties according to moisture decrease are quite precise, but most of estimations were higher than the experimental values at 12% moisture content, indicating the need of a standard review for such estimators, which may lead to an unsafe timber structure design. For a conclusive consideration of moisture content variation influence on wood products, further researches with other tropical wood species are required.
